The Classics

I love to read.  Books, magazines, articles, blogs, etc.  Anything that grabs my attention - I like to read it!  I've read all the Harry Potter books but have never as much picked up the Twilight series (gasp!).  I like books on Christianity, parenting and sometimes even self-help books depending on the topic.  Memoirs and fiction are also among my faves.  But I have a confession to make... *whispers*... those books considered classics, I haven't really read any of those.. shhh! The Great Gatsby, Little Women, The Red Badge of Courage, To Kill a Mockingbird - yep, haven't read any of those!

Now, being in school full-time doesn't leave me much time for reading anything other than my textbooks so I'm not a big reader between August and May but I like to fill up my summer with as many good reads as I can.  I even took part in the goodreads.com book challenge last summer and read a little over a book a month.  But today in the library after the girls picked out way more books than they would read in three months time they made their way back to the computer center where this is this small section titled, "Classics".  I made my way over there and realized, "wow, I haven't read any of these!" and decided to check out The Great Gatsby right then and there!

So, not only am I reading 100+ pages a week in my textbook for my class on the Book of Acts (which is an extremely tough commentary) and 100+ pages a week in my textbook for my class that teaches me how to teach students to read and I'm reading the Book of Acts from the Bible (I have to read it three times in three different translations this 8 weeks) as well as the Bible itself (I'm reading the Bible in a year in chronological order thanks to the youversion app on my phone!).  I am also trying to get through a book called The Circle Maker about prayer but haven't picked it up all semester.  THEN, our life group is doing a study on a book called Not a Fan that I would really like to read so that is on my short list of books to read, like, now

And now I've checked out The Great Gatsby and it's due back in 2 weeks and despite the fact I can renew it endlessly (I'm pretty sure there won't be a waiting list as I'm the only one left in the world who hasn't read it!) I feel like I need to read it soon!  Why else would I check it out today?  It's a pretty short book and seemed interesting so I'm getting back into my nightly routine of reading instead of watching TV.

It may take me longer to get through these books than normal but I want to read them (the interesting ones at least!).  I'm not sure what I'll read next - something shorter so I can actually feel like I'm accomplishing something perhaps!

How many of the classics have you read? What do you recommend I read next?

  1. There are a lot that I haven't read, but feel I should (namely Pride & Prejudice and War& Peace). I have read To Kill a Mockingbird - loved it! Also read Little Women and loved that too! There are definitely some goodies out there. Keep me posted - I've read three fictional novels so far this year, but no classics!
